We are seeking a high-caliber Barrister-at-Law in Mauritius with 3 to 5 years of standing at the Bar to join our corporate team. This is a unique hybrid role where you will operate within a global legal framework, providing top-tier legal services for an international law firm, headquartered in South Africa, while acting as a key advisor for an affiliated FSC-licensed Management Company in Mauritius.
Key Responsibilities (non-exhaustive)
Law Firm – Domestic and International Clients
- Corporate & Commercial Advisory: Provide expert legal advice on M&A, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, and other transactions.
- Litigation & Dispute Resolution: Manage any client litigation matter in collaboration with in-house and external counsels (where applicable), both in Mauritius and internationally.
- Drafting & Negotiation: Draft, vet, and negotiate a wide range of international commercial contracts, trust deeds, and constitutional documents (Constitutions, Shareholders’ Agreements).
- Service African and international clients on any legal matters as allocated from time to time by management.
- Legal Research: Stay abreast of legislative changes in Mauritius (e.g., Companies Act, Income Tax Act, and Insurance Act) and their impact on international tax and corporate structures.
- Produce regular thought leadership pieces on Mauritian law and updates.
- Participate in client and internal calls as prescribed from time to time and work in close collaboration with the wider pan-African team.
- Participate as Counsel of Record in International and Commercial Arbitration matters.
- Draw up and present proposal documents for potential clients
- Drafting/vetting: Draft/vet/execute regulatory application documents such as company Constitution, legal certificates and application forms.
- Address regulatory and bank queries on any client applications/MC’s own applications and ad-hoc payments.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Professional Standing: Must be a duly qualified Barrister-at-Law admitted to the Mauritius Bar with 3 to 5 years PQE.
- Education: A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is required. A Master of Laws (LLM) in Corporate, Commercial, or International Tax Law will be considered a significant advantage.
- Industry Expertise: Proven experience in litigation management and provision of legal advice. Experience in the Global Business/Offshore sector and a deep understanding of FSC licensing and regulatory frameworks will be considered a significant advantage.
Skills:
- Fluency in English and French (written and spoken) is essential.
- Exceptional drafting skills with a keen eye for detail in complex legal instruments.
- Strong commercial acumen and the ability to provide “solution-oriented” advice.
- Professionalism: Must be a member in good standing with the Mauritius Bar Association and demonstrate the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
