“We see tremendous potential in these regions, and our investments are focused on developing sustainable solutions that can benefit local communities and economies,” Kariuki explained. “The integration of technologies like Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is essential for Africa’s energy future. By utilizing the gas resources on the continent efficiently, we can greatly enhance energy security.”
Natural Gas as a Catalyst for Growth
Natural gas has quickly gained recognition as a cleaner alternative to coal, offering a transitional energy source that supports the shift toward renewables. As a bridge fuel, it reduces emissions and ensures that Africa can meet its rapidly growing energy demands without compromising environmental sustainability. Studies show that natural gas emits up to 50% less carbon dioxide than coal, making it a viable option for reducing the carbon footprint of the continent’s energy infrastructure.
Countries such as Mozambique, Nigeria, and Angola are taking significant strides in harnessing natural gas to address their energy needs. Mozambique, in particular, is emerging as a key player, with its vast offshore gas reserves expected to position it as one of the world’s top LNG exporters, with investments projected to reach $50 billion. Similarly, Angola aims to ramp up its gas output from 9 billion cubic meters in 2020 to over 15 billion cubic meters by 2025, contributing to both domestic energy security and export capabilities.

Innovative Technologies Driving Progress
Technologies such as Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) are helping revolutionize Africa’s energy landscape. FLNG technology, in particular, has played a crucial role in unlocking stranded gas reserves across the continent. Countries like Nigeria and Cameroon have made great strides in utilizing FLNG technology to access untapped gas resources, leading to new export opportunities and increased energy access for local communities.
In Tanzania, CNG infrastructure is reshaping the transportation sector, providing cleaner alternatives to traditional fuels. TAQA Dalbit, a joint venture between Janus Continental Group Oil and Gas and TAQA Arabia, has installed CNG facilities like the Mastergas station in Dar es Salaam, which serves over 1,600 vehicles daily. Similar plans are in place in Egypt, where the goal is to expand the number of CNG stations to 1,000 by 2025.
“These advancements represent a pivotal shift in how we approach energy access,” said Kariuki. “Natural gas is a key driver in our transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape.”
Economic and Environmental Benefits
The economic potential of Africa’s natural gas sector is immense. According to the African Development Bank, gas infrastructure projects have the potential to create over 1.5 million jobs and boost Africa’s GDP by up to 3% annually. Beyond the economic benefits, the environmental advantages are clear, as natural gas plays a key role in reducing Africa’s carbon footprint while transitioning toward renewable energy solutions.
However, Kariuki urges that growth must go hand-in-hand with sustainability. “We must ensure that our investments not only boost our economies but also adhere to environmental standards that protect our planet for future generations,” he stated.
Overcoming Challenges and Unlocking Potential
While the opportunities for natural gas development in Africa are vast, challenges such as financing, regulatory uncertainty, and market instability remain. To address these, the newly established Africa Energy Bank is helping mitigate risks by offering low-interest loans, guarantees, and equity investments aimed at supporting natural gas projects.
Additionally, government support remains essential. Clear and predictable regulatory frameworks, coupled with risk-sharing mechanisms, are vital to attracting international capital and fostering investor confidence. As Kariuki noted, “Establishing gas offtake agreements and risk-sharing mechanisms can attract private capital and facilitate the development of essential infrastructure projects.”
