ENGIE Energy Access, a leading provider of Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) and mini-grid solutions in Africa, has announced the commencement of construction on 15 solar mini-grids in Zambia’s Eastern Province. This significant initiative is part of the transformative Increase Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Production (IAEREP) programme, which receives funding from the 11th European Development Fund and the European Union.
Expanding Off-Grid Energy Solutions
ENGIE’s project aims to broaden the adoption of off-grid energy solutions in Zambia, providing reliable electricity to underserved families and small businesses. This venture is expected to spur economic growth and enhance socio-economic welfare within the local communities.
Operational Excellence and Sustainable Impact
MySol Grid Zambia, a division within ENGIE Energy Access, will handle the construction, ownership, operation, and maintenance of these mini-grids. This strategic approach ensures that both residential and commercial customers, along with those using energy for productive purposes, will have access to dependable and renewable power, along with additional value-adding services.
Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals
“We are thrilled to reach this important milestone, advancing ENGIE Energy Access towards its goal of operating 60 mini-grids across five provinces in Zambia,” stated Gillian-Alexandre Huart, CEO of ENGIE Energy Access. He emphasized that this project aligns closely with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7, which focuses on providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable clean energy to rural populations.
National Collaboration and Project Sites
ENGIE Energy Access is committed to working closely with Zambian authorities to expand energy access and support sustainable development nationwide. The initial sites for this groundbreaking project include Lusinde, Kandongwa, Nyimba Mwana, Chidiwa, Chataika, Kanyanga, Petulo, Kasamba, Mphole, Mung’omba, Kalambana, Mtore, Kondwelani, Lunga, and Luamphande, with plans to be operational by the end of 2024.
Financial Partnerships and Future Plans
In 2023, MySol Grid Zambia secured a USD 7.5 million debt facility with the Facility for Energy Inclusion (FEI), managed by Cygnum Capital. This funding will support the construction of a total of 60 mini-grids under the IAEREP programme, marking a significant advancement for the mini-grid sector through attracting non-recourse long-term financing.
ENGIE’s Growing Footprint in Zambia
Since establishing its presence in Zambia in 2017, ENGIE Energy Access has significantly expanded its operations. The company now employs over 250 people, along with 650 independent sales agents, and maintains more than 60 points of presence throughout the country. Additionally, ENGIE has sold over 300,000 solar home system (SHS) kits and currently operates one mini-grid in Chitandika.
