Africa is uniquely positioned to lead the global energy transition, according to António Manda, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME). Speaking at the 58th meeting of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) in Maputo, Manda emphasized the continent’s readiness and urged for increased investment in the sector’s infrastructure.

The country’s National Electrification Strategy, approved in 2018, focuses predominantly on renewable energy. Manda pointed to the construction of the 450-megawatt Temane Thermal Power Plant (CTT), fueled by natural gas, as a prime example of Mozambique’s investment in boosting its energy production capacity by approximately 16%.
“These regional projects will consolidate Mozambique’s position as an energy hub capable of generating and transporting large amounts of increasingly clean energy, thus boosting investments and productive initiatives,” Manda emphasized.
Additionally, the implementation of Mozambique’s Energy for All Program (ProEnergia) has notably increased domestic access to electricity—from just over 35% in 2020 to 54% currently. This program exemplifies the potential impact of focused energy policies and investments on enhancing the quality of life for millions.
